Heading out tonight and in need of a look that will turn heads? Look no further than The Mod Little Melanin! My futuristic, grunge inspired look will be sure to give you all the attention you need tonight while you're out. I originally wore the look below to Kendrick Lamar's The Damn Tour, and had no intention on posting this look on The Mod Little Melanin. However, after receiving so much praise for the look, it was only right to share with my readers where they can find these amazing pieces to recreate this look. The focal point of my outfit, and the first piece I actually purchased for this outfit, were these metallic sweatpants from Forever 21. They're apart of Forever 21's Sports Luxe collection, which has been a big trend this year thanks to some of your favorite celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian who have mastered the art of making sports luxe look elegant and upscale. These pants were actually a clearance find for $10.99, and while they may not still be in all stores, you may be able to find them on your local clearance rack in store. Remember, Forever 21's end of season clearance sale should begin next weekend before Labor Day. Initially, I had no clue how to style my metallic sweatpants. I created numerous polyvore sets, and searched through my closet for the perfect top to wear with these pants. I finally came across this mesh tee shirt, another big trend of the year, on Forever21.com and knew it would be perfect for the look! To make the top more modest, I layered a haltered crop top underneath the mesh shirt. The accessories for this look were the key to pulling it off, yet were kept simple enough as to not overpower the look. I added a silver metallic choker from Forever 21, and a pair of large, silver hoop earrings, and finished off the accessories with an assortment of stakced rings. My shoes are a find from Charlotte Russe, and were only $6.99 during one of their summer sales. My makeup, and lipstick choice were the most talked about pieces of the look. I choose to wear a neutral, brown smokey eye, which I created using a Wet n Wild palette from their higher end line (I still swear by drugstore makeup) and completed the look with a lavender matte lipstick from NYX. The key to pulling off a brightly colored lipstick is treating it like an accessory. That means if you are wearing a purple lip, you should not also be wearing a purple outfit. That's a big fashion no-no. Instead, pair your bold lip with a simple look to pop it!

Despite what everyone says, everyone needs a good pair of mom jeans in their life. People like me on the other hand, have several good pairs of mom jeans, thanks to a hidden gem in Lawrence known as Arizona Trading Company (follow them on Instagram @arizonatradingco). However, I've had my eye on this pair of jeans from H&M for months now, and knew they had to be mine when the price came down from $40 to $10. \n \nNo pair of mom jeans is complete without a full 90's inspired look! To style this look, I added a cold shoulder top that had a cropped fit. The key to styling a high waisted, mom jean is to make sure you show off the high waist! Either a cropped top or a baggy shirt, that can be tucked in to show off the waist. I added a brown belt to the look as a practical accessory to ensure that my pants would remain at my waist. Finish off your look with key 90's accessories! I choose to add a pair of white, jelly sandals that I purchased from American Apparel before they closed their doors earlier this year, and a pair of hoop earrings. My hairstyle was inspired by my favorite Spice Girl, Scary Spice, aka Mel B. To achieve my hairstyle, blow out your hair using only a blowdryer, stretch it a few rollers over night, I used about six on each side. When you take the rollers out, run your fingers through the curls to loosen, part your hair in a cross at the front of your head, make two equal buns, and then your done! Let me know if you all would be interested in hair or makeup tutorials on The Mod Little Melanin! I'm no makeup artist, but do have a few go-to looks that are perfect for day or night!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin Here's a 90's inspired look featuring the latest trend, velvet! I found this velvet, spaghetti strapped dress at Rue 21 a few months ago, and have been stumped as how to style it! After scrolling through Pinterest, and feeling inspired by a few trends of the mid 90's, I came up with this simple look that's easy to recreate with items in your own closet! To recreate my look, take a a white tank or t-shirt and simply layer it underneath your spaghetti strapped dress and you've got your own 90's inspired look! If you don't want your tank or tee to look "bulky" underneath your dress, opt to wear a crop top instead! The t-shirt I'm wearing is actually a micro crop top from H&M that I purchased last season on clearance. Of course no 90's inspired look is complete without the proper 90's inspired accessories! I choose to complete my look with a pink, beaded choker from Forever 21, and threw it all the way back to 1999 with a pair of crisp white K-Swiss classics!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin It's Lollapalooza this weekend in Chicago! If you're like me and watching all of your friends flock to Chicago, here's a Lolla inspired outfit to get you in a festive mood! The focal point of today's look are these gold, metallic pants I found at American Apparel, before they closed. While most would find metallic pieces difficult to style, these pants have become a staple in my wardrobe year-round, and have appeared in multiple looks on The Mod Little Melanin. To keep this look simple, I choose to style the pant with a black, graphic halter top, purchased from Wet Seal before they closed their doors last year. The key to successfully styling metallics is to allow the metallic piece to remain the focal point through the entire look. This means minimizing all accessories (including shoes, and purses) to keep the focus on your metallic piece.
For this reason, I completed this look with my black, faux fur backpack (another summer staple) and my gold flatform shoes found at Target. If you're wearing a pant that is too long for you, and you do not plan to hem your pant, be sure to always pair your pant with a heel to keep the look crisp and clean. It appears sloppy if you allow your pant (or a maxi dress) to drag the ground as you walk. Happy Lolla! - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin |
