My favorite season of the year is just around the corner! Autumn is coming and now is the time to transition your wardrobe to pre-autumn looks to help you manage the changing temperatures of the coming September days. Pre-Autumn looks are super easy to manage within your wardrobe. Simply add a piece of outerwear or swap out your shorts for jeans. My favorite way to transition looks to Autumn is to add knee highs or tights underneath my summer dresses and skirts. For this particular look, I added an oversized denim jean jacket to transition the look into a pre-autumn look. Autumn is the perfect time to incorporate more textures into your wardrobe. These faux leather shorts from Missguided.com can be worn year-round, in the colder months simply pair them with thigh high boots and tights. I purchased these shorts for only $8.00 during Missguided.com's super sale that has been going on all summer. New items are added to the sale daily. I paired these shorts with a fishnet-like, fringed crop top also from Missguided.com, that I purchased for $4.80. When I planned this outfit it was unseasonably chilly for a July night in Kansas, so layering the entire look with an oversized denim jacket was a must. My jacket is actually a vintage find from my dad's closet. It's an early 2000s distressed denim jacket from Oldnavy from their A/W 2004 collection. Early 2000s style has been reappearing in the latest fashion magazines and is predicted to be a popular trend this fall. Now is the time to hit your local resale shops in search of those late 1990s, early 2000s gems. In Autumn, I'll pair this look with my denim perspex booties from Ego.co.uk, but for now I completed the look with my nude lace up gladiator sandals from Shophopes.com. I also added a bronzed collar style choker, stacked rings and button-style bronzed earrings to complete the look.
Trend Alert: Flares are back this Autumn. Add a few to your wardrobe. My favorite place for flares is Oldnavy! They have various denim styles and cuts to give any woman the perfect look in their jeans! - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋

Flowly shorts have been trending all summer, and in the dog days of summer, now is the perfect time to add a pair to tour wardrobe. My floral printed shorts are from Charlotte Russe, and are from last season's summer collection. They were purchased for around $10.00. They're the perfect stand out shorts with their bright, neon colors and floral pattern throughout. What I love most about flowly shorts is that they can be dressed up or down. To dress them up add a crop top (they're high waisted) and a pair of wedge heels. For kicks, add a statement necklace or a floral crown. I choose to dress down the shorts instead with a simple pink tank from JcPenny and added a pair of gold flatform sandals from Target. All of the sandals at Target are now on sale 😊 Rather than pair a statement piece with this look, I choose to add a pair of gold hoop earrings and popped the outfit with a gold glitter clutch purse. Don't forget to add a matching hot pink lip to complete the look! - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋
Remember the dress I styled from my Shop Priceless? Here's another way to style it to fit the sporty chic trend. My KJ Stripe Dress from Shoppriceless.com was purchased for around $3.00. What I hate most about this dress is that it's super short. I'm a little under 5'7" but this dress is made for someone who is barely 5'0" tall, which isn't ideal because the average woman is 5'4". For this reason, I styled this dress with lace black biker leggings from Target. I felt like this instantly gave the look a sporty vibe. To create a sporty chic look, I added my Balenciaga Race Runner dupes from Ego Footwear. Race Runners start at about $600, but I was able to purchase these dupes for $35. The dupes are nearly identical to the original shoe, with the only difference being the real shoe laces up and the dupes are slip ons. To accentuate the sporty look, I added my leather baseball cap from Charming Charlie's and my thick velvet choker from Forever21.com. For more information on where to purchase these dupes, visit http://themodlittlemelanin.weebly.com/fake-it-till-ya-make-it.html.
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 In a world of fashion bloggers who wear the same old, Kardashian inspired clothing for every single post. Who wear boring, monochromatic tones (white, grey, beige, nude). Who wear the same style of high waisted denim cutoffs, jeans, etc with a pair of Birks, and alternate a white top and call it fashion, I chose to stand out. Maybe you won't mix prints in your outfit, or you won't wear fur (real or faux) because you love animals too much (save the lectures, I've already blocked many people who needed to voice their opinions to me this past winter), but I will. Fashion is about art, and art is about standing out. No one is going to feature your painting in a museum if it's an exact replica of The Mona Lisa, so why would you do the same with your style? I understand some people are terrified to take fashion risks, they fear what others might say or do behind their back, or that they'll get looks. I take pride in people staring at me when I wear my hot pink fur pom headband in public, or when I dress like I've spent two weeks at Coachella. I wish more would dress without the fear of other's opinions. It's perfectly fine to wear the latest trends, but mix them up! Make them your own! You don't have to dress like you just left Kim Kardashian's closet to gain attention in the world of fashion. My favorite blogger and YouTuber is Charmine Daudu, @Charmise on Instagram and @MissCharmise on YouTube. She's so confident in her style. Mixing prints, patterns, textures, colors and trying the latest stand out trends always. The point of my thoughts is simple, dare to be different! Fashion is supposed to be fun; who cares what others may think! I certainly don't! I created this look based on a Polyvore Style Set I made. I wanted to come up with creative ways to wear a simple denim mini shift dress I had purchased from Oldnavy for a few dollars (seriously, their clearance is amazing sometimes). The dress is very mini on me, so I must always wear it with tights, knee highs, leggings, etc to make it tasteful. To avoid looking like a four year old, Polyvore was my best option for outfit planning. I added a pair of Hanes hot pink tights I found at the Dollar Tree for $1.00. I have these in every stand out color, orange, purple, turquoise, and hot pink. They're top quality and wash up well in the washing machine. I've managed to get more than one wear out of these without them snagging or tearing, which is awesome! To add more hot pink vibes to the look, I tied a silk scarf into a neck bandana. I got this scarf at my former job, Love Culture, before they closed down their only Kansas City area location. The scarf features hints of gold, and I wanted my outfit to feature those gold hints as well. I added a pair of gold flatform sandals from Target which I was able to snag for about $10 last season and stacked a few gold bracelets and rings for accessories. Hot pink lipstick was the key to pulling this look together. Your fashion should reflect your mood of the day! Be a Style Chameleon in a world of Kardashian dupes!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 Earlier this week, I showed you how to dress up basic items in your closet with a few key accessories/outerwear. Today, I'll be showing you another easy way to do that! This is also an easy festival look if you're attending a late summer music festival. Start with a high waisted bottom. I choose a pair of highwaisted distressed shorts in olive. My shorts were $10.00 from Charlotte Russe. This color is super popular this season, and will likely be popular into the next season! To dress up these shorts, add a pair of barely there heels, or a pair of thigh high boots. I'll link both below. Next, add a solid tank or tee. I choose a black pocket tank from Oldnavy that I purchased for about $2.00. To dress up the tank, I tied a black bandana neck scarf around my neck and added a velvet fedora from Forever21.com. Summer booties are super popular these days, and this pair features openings on both sides to allow your foot to breathe within the shoe. If you're looking for a pair, you may find them on sale on CharlotteRusse.com. To transition this look into fall, I would add my long sleeve suede fringe jacket in black. I was able to find it on Missguided.com for $8.00. A distressed denim jacket or a leather biker jacket would also work well with this look.
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 It's SCW (Style Crush Wednesday)! Today's look is inspired by my SCW, and favorite Boho Queen, Vanessa Anne Hudgens! You may know Vanessa from the once popular movie trilogy, High School Musical. Boho is Vanessa's calling, she styles it better than any celebrity out there, and makes it look simply effortless. Here's a simple boho look you can put together with ease! Start with a romper! I choose this white eyelet pattern romper than I purchased from Target at the end of the summer season for about $10.00. To create a boho look, a solid patterned romper in a cream or bold color would look best, think burgundy, yellow, or a bright royal blue. Next, add a fringe suede or faux suede vest or jacket to your look. I choose this tan suede fringe vest from Forever 21. It is from their premium collection, is real suede and was priced around $80.00. I was lucky enough to purchase it for only $10.00 on clearance. Suede doesn't have much give, so I suggest always going a size up from your regular size. You may be able to find some more affordable faux suede options on Forever21.com, Missguided.com or Misspap.co.uk. The final step to create the boho look was to add boho inspired accessories. I added a pair of lace-up gladiator sandals from Shophopes.com. These sandals, along with others are now on sale for 50% off on Shophopes.com in the sale folder. I also added a pair of round, mirror sunglasses from Wet Seal. Wet Seal, along with Charlotte Russe are my favorite places to shop for sunnies. They are always as low as $3.00 or $4.00, in store. My final touch was the addition of my burgendy bolo choker from Forever21.com and a bold brick red lip. I use either Rimmel London's Boudreaux or Ruby Kisses Boudreaux. - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 Today's look is inspired by the fashion trends of the 1980's, think The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles. This is also a super easy outfit to throw together if you are unsure of what to wear and have a ton of graphic or band tees in your closet. I found this gem of a tee featuring the late and great Muhammad Ali for $5.00 at Five Below. If you don't have a Five Below in your town, it's essentially a dollar store where everything in the store costs five dollars or below. This is actually a men's vintage style tee, but I wanted to dress it up to make it appear as more than a simple t shirt. For this reason, I styled it with these high waisted, black and white plaid pants from Oldnavy. I LOVE these pants so much! They are super comfy, have a good amount of stretch and can be styled in so many different ways. I choose to dress the pants down with a basic graphic tee, but look forward to styling the pants with blazers, faux furs and underneath a tuxedo dress. The best part about these pants is that they were only $1.97 at Oldnavy. Oldnavy has tons of items marked up to 90% off on their clearance racks, I advise you to check your local store! To accent the look, I added a black bandana neck scarf. In June, I showed how to tie a bandana into a neck scarf on The Mod Little Melanin. You can find neck scarves at Walmart for $1.00. I also added silver hoop earrings. The most important element of the look was the velvet fedora from Forever 21. It fully provided the 1980's inspired look. My shoes are one of the pairs of shoes I highlighted in my Spring Shoe Trends post in March on The Mod Little Melanin. I found these flats on Ego.co.uk for only $6.00 and was able to score free shipping. The website now has shoes up to 80% off in their sale folder. Expect to see these pants again on The Mod Little Melanin, as we make the transition to Autumn.
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 A few weeks ago I posted about Shop Priceless's amazing sale, with items marked up to 75% off and priced as low as $1.25. All of the dresses styled in the pictures below were purchased in the sale, and are currently sold out on shoppriceless.com. The KJ Striped Dress features black and white stripes throughout, and a asymmetrical hemline, and was purchased for $3.60. I styled the dress to fit the popular sporty chic trend. I added a faux leather baseball cap from Charming Charlie's, a thick, velvet choker from Forever21.com and large hoop earrings. Rather than add tennis shoes to the look, I opted to include white combat boots from Wet Seal. To add a feminine touch I added lace, fishnet stockings underneath the dress. The Rivera Basic Dress in Black was purchased for a steal at only $1.80. Since this is just a basic black bodycon style dress, I wanted to dress it up a bit to make it the perfect outfit for day or night. Kimonos are regaining popularity. This kimono is from Burlington Coat Factory, and was likely less than $10. Platform '70s style heels are also making a comeback! This pair was recently purchased from Target for $8.00 (thanks to the Cartwheel app). I'm taking a fashion risk here, and adding charcoal grey leg warmers to the look that should be worn just above the shoe. To accesorize, I added a beaded choker from Claire's and button style, black pearl earrings. The Weekend Update Dress in Mint is perfect for date night or a day at the beach! I styled it with a large sun hat from Walmart (check your local Walmart, I found a bunch for $1.00), a cream floral choker from Claire's and a pair of faux pearl earrings. To complete the look, I added a pair of white, lace up heels from Shophopes.com. Ladies, this look is also perfect for your upcoming Rush event! I wanted this look to be sweet and flirty. Add a Chanel style white purse to complete the look. This dress was purchased for $3.90. The Tai Plaid Dress is the perfect dress to create a '90s look. Add a black t shirt underneath in the summer, or a black turtleneck underneath in the winter months. I added a thick velvet choker to add to the '90s vibes and decided to complete the look with my platform heels from Target. To pop the look, I've added a sequins rose gold hat from Burlington Coat Factory. Ball caps are making a comeback in the fashion industry, and this is the perfect girly version of the look. This look would look great with a bold, red lip and a cat eye. This dress was purchased for $3.90. These are great back to school looks, as well! What I love most about planning layouts, is that it becomes easier to style my looks in a hurry! Which is important because everything will be packed away and unorganized when I move in a few weeks!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 Drake's OVO Fest was this past Sunday and Monday in Toronto, Canada and notable fashion slayer, Robyn Rihanna Fenty slayed the lives of those attending and not attending the concert on night one. I instantly fell in love with Rihanna's look and knew it needed to be duped for an affordable version! Rihanna is pictured wearing a longline, orange bomber-style jacket. While I don't have any outfit details on Rihanna's look, it's safe to say that her entire outfit is worth a couple $1,000. I've found a similar longline bomber jacket from Loveculture.com for $39.95. Not only is the jacket in a brand new trending color for Autumn, it revamps the '90s trend of patches. You can find patches at your local craft store to iron onto your own coats to recreate the look. The Remix Crop Top from FashionNova.com is the perfect affordable option to recreate Rihanna's look. It features a high neckline, with cutouts on either side of the neckline. What's perfect about this crop top is its versatility. It has the potential to be dressed up or down. Wear it with a skirt, for a night out or wear it with high waisted jeans, a khaki green bomber, and tennis shoes for a casual look. For this look, pair it with Fashion Nova's Worn and Torn shorts in light denim! If you're up for the challenge and feeling creative, visit your local thrift store and buy a pair of high waisted jeans to cut off and distress into shorts similar to those below. I've gotten lucky enough to find old Levi's jeans for no more than $5.00. The look wouldn't be complete without a pair of orange boots! While dupes of Rihanna's boots are not yet available, these orange mesh boots from Ego.co.uk are the perfect substitute! The Callie Mesh Ankle Heeled Boots in Orange Mesh feature the trending perspex heel. Mesh boots will be all the rage this Autumn, so grab a pair before everyone else has them. Complete the look with your favorite pair of sunnies! I recommend Charlotte Russe or Wet Seal to find the perfect pair!
Mark my words, orange will be a popular color this Autumn, and now is the time to stock up on your orange pieces for your closet! - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 Basics have been trending for the past few seasons, and while I have been trying my best to avoid casualwear, which has become the norm, I knew that sooner or later I would give in and follow suit! I haven't quite stepped into full Kardashian attire, but I'm sure it's only a few months away. My look was inspired by Kylie Jenner's sporty chic style. I styled this entire look with a focus on my Puma by Rihanna Creeper dupes from Ego.co.uk. To embrace the sporty chic trend, I started with a khaki green skirt from Missguided.com that I purchased for only $4.80. Currently, Missguided.com is having a sale with items up to 70% off. New items are posted daily at 1:30 am (the store is based in the UK and they are 7 hours ahead of my time zone) with items that are perfect for day or night. I'll post my entire haul next week! This skirt features a textured print throughout, and has a curved hem. Unlike other skirts, this skirt has two high-cut slits on either side of the front of the skirt, thus allowing the skirt to be dressier than your average basic skirt. To continue on my, "What would Kylie wear" look, I added a shirt in the same khaki color family. My tank is a high neck tank from Oldnavy that I've worn on The Mod Little Melanin in other colors before. I purchased this tank for $2.00, and while this top is no longer available for purchase, a similar tank in khaki green was on sale this weekend for $2.00.
As previously mentioned in last weeks blog post, my shoes are from Ego.co.uk and were $12.00 at my time of purchase. Currently they have creeper dupes for as low as $6.00 in the sale folder. I limited my accessories for this look and opted to wear gold chunky hoop earrings, my gold choker from Wet Seal and a gold knuckle ring from Forever 21. My purse (not shown) even is within the khaki green color family and is a mini army print shoulder bag.
