Joggers, Joggers, Joggers

Joggers have been my favorite piece of loungewear during this entire coronavirus lockdown. You can easily dress them up or down, simply by changing your top. One of my favorite ways to style a pair of joggers is with a bodysuit, thus creating a sleek and sophisticated look. If you’re looking for cute, yet affordable bodysuits for your wardrobe, I highly recommend shopping on Shein. Shein offers hundreds of options for both bodysuits and tops, with most tops priced at $10.00 and below.

Unlike your average sweatpant jogger, this pair of joggers is made of a khaki-like twill material. However, they still offer the same amount stretch and comfort that you find with a pair of sweatpants. I found this pair of joggers at Target as a part of their Wild Fable Collection for only $10.00.

Styling this look was simple! I paired a black, square-neck cropped top also from Target’s Wild Fable Collection that I purchased for $5.00. To complete the look, I added my Balenciaga sneaker dupe from Target.

The easiest way to style joggers in a sleek way is to pick one color to style on top and bottom, i.e. your top should match your shoes. For example, if you’re wearing a white, one shoulder bodysuit, choose a white chunky dad sneaker for your shoe. This helps to create a sophisticated look that can be worn around the house, to the park, to brunch, or even to a family-focused outing.

The last teddy coat of the season

4/16/2020

It snowed in Kansas City last night...crazy, right? The weather in the Midwest is absolutely ridiculous! This morning we had snow and ice, and tomorrow it’ll be back to 70 degrees. Since this will likely be my last winter post until October rolls around, I figured this is the perfect time to highlight my teddy bear coat, because honestly who knows what the fashion trends will be next winter.

I originally shot these pictures during Christmas 2018. They’ve been sitting in my camera roll that long, and I honestly just forgot about them. But this holiday look was one of my favorite looks that I’ve ever done.

When I think of the holidays, I think of plaid. Rather than going with the traditional plaid button-down that you often see in family holiday pictures, I instead choose to wear a pair of high-rise red black double-layered leggings. I’ve worn these leggings in a variety of ways. Often, in a “punk-rock” inspired look with a giant band tee and an oversized jean jacket.

For this particular look, I wanted a more classic outfit for taking family pictures. To create this look, I paired a plain black turtleneck with my leggings, and tucked the top in. Tucking the top helps to create a sleek look on the “under layer” of the outfit. When you’re layering a look, the under layer is what I consider the basic pieces that make up your outfit, such as your top or your leggings or jeans. The “outer layer” of this outfit is made up solely of the teddy bear coat. I found this teddy bear coat at Forever 21 a few years before they really gained their popularity. I only paid $20.00 for this coat at the time of purchase. Currently, a teddy bear coat can run upwards of $100 or more.

In my opinion, the best way to style high-rise leggings in the winter is with a knee high or thigh high boot. An ankle boot or even a mid-calf boot doesn’t come high enough to create a sleek base when styling with a piece of oversized outerwear. These knee high boots are from Rue 21, and are incredibly comfy, even after a long day of walking.

Hopefully, this is winter’s last hoorah in Kansas City. Fingers crossed.

Happy Friday!

If you’ve been following my blog, The Mod Little Melanin for the last few years, then you know my style changes from day to day depending on my mood. However, no matter the look of the day that I’m going for, I always stay true to my values of dressing mod, aka cool, chic and authentically me.

Today’s look of the day features this cute and comfy top from one of my favorite online boutiques, XOMandySue! I discovered the boutique one day while scrolling through my Instagram and instantly fell in love with the clothes they offered. XOMandySue offers a multitude of pieces, including tops, bottoms, dresses, rompers/jumpers, outerwear, shoes and accessories inspired by beachy feels and effortless style. The boutique is owned by a husband and wife in California, Lindsay and Robby, and each piece that is selected for the website is handpicked to align with the aesthetic of their store!

What I love most about XOMandySue is that they offer a little bit of something for everyone, from the woman who feels her best in jeans and a cute tee, to the woman who is looking for the perfect outfit for date night with her significant other. No matter what your style is, I promise you will find something that appeals to your own personal style when shopping their boutique!

I’ve placed several orders from their website, and I know I will be placing many more as they add new pieces to their website, XOmandysue.com, each and every Monday. Today, I’m sharing how I styled the Taylor Top from their website! The Taylor Top is a super soft and super comfortable pink and white baseball style tee. But what I love most about the Taylor Top is that it isn’t just your traditional baseball style tee, as it features gorgeous pink bell sleeves! The bell sleeves make it the perfect top to style in a variety of ways! For example, you could pair the Taylor Top with a cute denim skirt, like the Suzie skirt and a pair of sandals, such as the Everyday Sandals in white, for an outfit that’s perfect for a day on the boardwalk!

I chose to style the Taylor Top with a pair of ankle length jeans, and a pair of white tennis shoes for an easy and comfy look that’s perfect for a breezy Spring day! This top could also be paired with a cute baseball cap, for a fun outfit that can be worn to the baseball park.

One of my favorite ways to dress up casual looks, such as a tee shirt and jeans, is by adding a cute scarf to my hair as a hair accessory. I prefer to tie the scarf around my ponytail holder into a bow for a cute way to add a pop of pizazz to my look! The Porsha Scarf sold by XOMandySue is a perfect scarf to pair with the Taylor Top!

All of the pieces mentioned throughout this blog piece and linked and highlighted in yellow! Give them a click to shop the above pieces. Stay tuned for more looks showcasing my favorite pieces from XOMandySue! Use my code “CHELSEANICOLE” on XOMandySue.com at checkout for 35% off your purchase!

Red friday flashback

Life in a world without sports. Ever since the NBA season was suspended, and baseball season never got off the ground, I must admit that life in a world without sports has been pretty boring. I, and I’m sure many other avid sports fans took for granted being able to turn on their televisions and catch their favorite sport(s) team in action.

I myself am a huge football and basketball fan. High school, college, semi-pro, professional, you name it, I’m watching it. But what I miss the most, is the amazing football season the Kansas City Chiefs had! Planning outfits for Red Friday was my joy of the week. And even though I spent most of the NFL season in Philadelphia, I still made a point to wear my red each and every Friday, and never miss a game. Here’s a look back at Red Friday outfit before the Super Bowl!

If you’re new to The Mod Little Melanin, the motto here is to “Stay Mod.” So what exactly does that mean? To me, to stay mod means to stay true to who you are; to be cool, chic and authentically you. I chose to stay authentically true to my values through my style that I showcase on The Mod Little Melanin, and only selecting to represent brands that allow me to display my authenticity.
Picture
This outfit completely represents that to me. Rather than simply wearing a Chiefs shirt and a pair of jeans, the standard Red Friday look, I instead choose to wear a bright red fringe open sweater from Nasty Gal. I love how trendy and fun this piece is. It can literally be worn in a million ways and layered over many different looks.

For this particular look, I layered this sweater over a black cropped top. I would’ve preferred to layer it over a white top to really nail Chiefs colors in this look, but I didn’t have one readily available. I finished off the look by pairing a pair of bell bottom jeans from Shop Hope’s. I am absolutely in love with these jeans! They are available in small, medium and large on their website. I’m wearing a large, but I could have easily sized down to a medium for a more fitted waist, as these pants don’t have belt loops.

I completed the look with a bold red lip. I’m wearing Mary Jo K Lipstick by Kylie Cosmetics. I also added a pair of hoop earrings.

Happy Red Friday!

Cute and comfy quarantine style

4/7/2020

Teddy coats were incredibly popular this winter. In fact, scrolling through my Instagram feed it was hard to find a post without some sort of teddy outerwear. Per usual, I had to get in on the trend of teddy outerwear, and am now the proud owner of several teddy pieces, including pullovers and sweatpants.

Until this weekend, I hadn’t worn my teddy joggers at all. Though they’re incredibly comfortable, they’re also incredibly warm and not the pants you want to just lounge around in if it isn’t freezing outside. But with Kansas City weather being absolutely unpredictable, I woke up to a chilly morning and knew that the teddy joggers would be the perfect comfortable outfit of the day for quarantine and chilling.

Picture
When styling these teddy joggers, my goal of the outfit was to look cute and comfy, not lazy and sloppy. For this reason, I opted for a neutral monochrome look, and paired the cream teddy joggers with a tan mock neck shirt that I tied to make a cropped shirt. Pairing a cropped shirt with the teddy joggers helped to define my waist in the outfit.

To keep with the comfy theme, I added a pair of crew length white socks, and chunky, white dad sneakers. Hoop earrings are always the perfect accessory to spice up a comfy sweatpant look. Lastly, I completed this cute and comfy look with the Louis Vuitton Multi Pochette Accessories Rose Clair purse. It’s the one of the more recent Louis Vuitton crossbody bags released by the brand, that unfortunately is no longer available for purchase on their website. However, it is available for purchase on resale websites like Tradsey.com, or Fashionpile.com.

Stay cute and comfy!
