I'm Bringing Boho Back

4/29/2016

I'm bringing boho looks back to The Mod Little Melanin. If you know me personally, you know I'm a style chameleon. My style changes from day to day, depending on both my mood and the occasion. Most of the time, I am dressed in boho-esque attire, however.

I purchased what I'm wearing as a long-length jacket from Forever 21. It's actually a long sleeve maxi dress that buttons down the front and laces up in the back, like a corset. The dress has never appealed to me when button completely closed, so I always wear it open.

Underneath the dress, I added solid colors that can be found in the pattern of the dress. My navy faux suede skirt was purchased from Oldnavy for only $1.99 (I search the clearance section high and low at the end of every season for deals) and is completely versitile. I worn this top on The Mod Little Melanin before. It's a nude top from Oldnavy. If you're looking for nude tops that match your skin color, check Oldnavy. This tank was $.99.

To accessorize, I added a burgundy hat from Charming Charlie's. My boots are navy faux suede boots are from Target, and were bought for only $7.99. I adore these boots and wish I was able to wear them year-round. Thankfully, it's been a Spring of oddly cool weather. My sunnies are from Forever 21. Honestly, I only purchased them because I saw Beyoncé with a similar pair.

Edgy with a Side of Tupac

For all my edgy girls out there, here's another way to style a metallic piece, in this case my metallic skirt.

Start with a metallic bottom. My skirt was purchased from Oldnavy. To create an edgy look, I added a graphic tank top. My tank top features a screen print of rapper, Tupac Shakur. This tank was purchased from Wet Seal a few seasons back. Great places to find graphic tees include Wet Seal and Forever 21. I have also had luck with finding graphic tees in the men's department of Walmart and Target, or at thrift shop. If you're willing to pay a little more money, Hot Topic also sells music related graphic tees.

To further the edgy look, I layered a faux leather motorcycle vest from Rue 21. The item was a Christmas gift, so I'm unsure of the original price. The tip to wearing a moto vest is to creating a slightly girly look with the dress. Add a skirt, or add pops of color, especially pink to sweeten up your edgy look! With my moto vest, I was able to create a monochromatic metallic look, focusing on the colors black and dark grey.

With midi skirts, I choose to wear boots always. Living in Kansas, you can get away with wearing boots for a while during the Spring. My boots were purchased a few years ago at Charming Charlie's. Though not shown, to complete the monochromatic metallic look, I added a feathered leather purse from Charming Charlie's that is shown below.

Minimalistic Metallics

I've been debating if I should post this today or wait until tomorrow all day long, but why not!

Today's look is from a few weeks back, and features a silver midi skirt from Oldnavy that was purchased for only $1.50. I love the look of this skirt! Not only does it look more expensive than it actually is, it is soft and can be dressed up or down depending on your mood of the day.

On a chilly Spring day, I added a grey sweater from H&M that was only $4.99. The sweater features a sequins perfume bottle (it's a perfume bottle, not anything else). With this sweater, I was able to create a dressy look. This particular sweater is made of a wool like fabric, and is great for a 50 and below Spring day!

I wanted to add pops of color to this minimalist look, so I add a hunter green fedora from Charming Charlie's. I was able to "pull" this color from the sweater in order to make the outfit pop. When wearing a minimalist outfit, always try to include pops of color here and there to make your outfit a "true piece of art." I prefer to wear boots with this look, and added a pair of black heeled boots.

On Wednesday, I will highlight another way to wear this skirt!

How Do I Wear Overalls? Part Three

I live in Kansas, where the weather changes day by day and you can still manage to wear sweaters and boots one day but need shorts and tank the next day. While this outfit may be too warm for your neck of the woods, if you live in cooler temperatures, here's an overall outfit for you!

I started with a pair of dark grey overalls from Hollister, that were purchased for $10.00 from Marshalls. These overalls are different than most overalls. They feature a slimmer fit in the leg and are low rise, which is uncommon for most overalls. The straps also criss-cross in the back and button closed rather than snap with a buckle.

I'd classify myself as a style chameleon, but for this look, I decided to take a minimalist approach, while experimenting with textures. I added a velvet light grey shirt underneath the overalls. This shirt was purchased from Forever 21 for only $4.99. If you're gonna go for a minimalist look, I encourage you to play around with patterns and textures to make your look pop. You can even incorporate different shades of the same color in your outfit.

To accesorize, I included large silver hoop earrings, and several silver rings on my fingers. To play around with textures, I carried a white faux fur purse, from Charming Charlie's. I completed the look with my black heeled boots, to allow for a variety of neutral colors in my outfit.

How Do I Wear Overalls? Part Two

Remember the overalls from yesterday's blog? Today, I'll be showing a different way to style that same pair of overalls so you don't have to look like a farmer! Don't worry, I wore both outfits weeks apart, believe it or not, so I'm not repeating an outfit the next day!

I started again with my medium denim overalls that were purchased from Target for $8.98. My goal for this look was to create more of a boho themed look, that was different from the first look. The only thing I did not change was the off the shoulder top. This time, I added a blush pink, cropped peasant top that was purchased from Shophopes.com for only $8.00. I can't wait to wear this top this summer and show other ways to style it on the blog!
Picture
To further the boho look, I included a pink floral headband that was purchased from Claire's for only $1.00. I wanted my accessories to reflect the floral, sweet theme present throughout my outfit. For this reason, I included a pink beaded bracelet from H&M for $1.00, pearl earrings and a floral ring from Claire's. I finished up the look by included a pair of pink espadrille shoes from Oldnavy that were only $.97. This look is pretty minimalistic, in my opinion, so I tried my best to allow my floral accessories to push the outfit to the next level. To take the look above and beyond, I added a pair of floral print, round, sunnies from Forever 21. While I purchased this pair a few summers ago, similar standout sunglasses can be found at Forever 21.

If you've been doing the math in your head, the price of this look from head to toe, including all accessories, is only $ 24.95! A complete steal for a full outfit!
