Last night was the 89th airing of the coveted Academy Awards. Discover who made The Mod Little Melanin's Best Dressed and Worst Dressed List by reading below! The Best DressedTaraji P. Henson To all the ladies in the place with style and grace, Taraji's look was my favorite of the night! Velvet has been a popular texture this season, and Taraji pulls it off well in this timeless Alberta Ferretti custom gown. Her simple, yet stunning accessories pull the look together effortlessy. Karlie Kloss Twenty-four year old supermodel, Karlie Kloss stunned in her white caped Stella McCartney gown. She accessorized her gown with the addition of blue ALCU ribbon, publicaly denouncing President Trump's travel ban. Janelle Monae Your clothing should speak for you, without you speaking for your clothing. Janelle Monae's Elie Saab gown did just that. Traditionally dawning a pantsuit at most award shows, Monae and her stylist opted to stun the masses in a gown that was absolutely suitable for Janelle Monae's first Oscar appearance. Moonlight, in which she plays the role of Teresa, cleaned up big as it won Best Screenplay and Best Picture. The Worst DressedDakota Johnson Part ugly curtains hanging in your grandmother's house, part Little House on the Prairie , Dakota Johnson's gown was a lose-lose situation. Perhaps it would look better if it did not come with a matching gold, metallic apron. Dakota Johnson is wearing Gucci. Naomie Harris I am not a fan of high low dresses, but this gown had potential. But like her gown, that potential trailed far behind at the end of her train. Naomei, if you need a stylist for next year's show, shoot me an email. Naomei is wearing Calvin Klein. Michelle Williams Michelle Williams has such stunning natural beauty, and I would have loved to see her in a gown that did not wash her out. The cut of the top looks as if it were thrown together last minute, and the skirt looks as if that it should have elastic at the waist. To me, her couture gown looks reminiscent of a bathing suit with a skirt thrown over top as a cover up to get to the bar at the end of the night. It's a no for me. (She too needs a new stylist. A jewel tone gown would have looked amazing on her.) Michelle is wearing Louis Vuitton.

Boho looks are a big part of why I started The Mod Little Melanin. While I don't particularly stay true to one style in my everyday wear, during the spring and summer months, my go to style is a boho look. Here is the first of many boho looks that will grace The Mod Little Melanin this season. To create this boho look, I styled this look with a denim, shift dress I found at Oldnavy on clearance for $0.97 last Spring. This dress features a v-neckline in the front and the back, and also has a raw, fringe hemline on the bottom of the dress. The dress is a petite cut (my mistake when purchasing, as I'm nowhere close to being petite - I'm 5'7" - if you round up lol) so I tend to pair it with tights, or shorts and a pair of shorts underneath (I wear shorts under all of my dresses). For this look, I paired the dress with a pair of tan, knee high socks that I purchased from Gap for $3.97, and also added a pair of biker shorts underneath, that I normally have a bit exposed in public so it looks obvious that I am actually wearing shorts(they're really jusy cut off leggings with lace added to the ends). My shoes are a find from Target, and have graced the blog on numerous occasions. Underneath my dress, I am wearing a simple tan and cream stripped turtleneck from Rue21 that I purchased for $3.00. Stay tuned all season long for my boho looks on The Mod Little Melanin!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 I rarely post casual looks on The Mod Little Melanin, but this look has a cool, laid back vibe, that I had to post and share with my followers. Continue reading below for my Kim Kardashian inspired causal look! Since Kim's terrible robbery fiasco in France, her style has shifted from glamorous and outlandish, to causal and comfy, with just the right amount of style. The key piece in this look was my oversized hoodie, that I purchased from Rue 21, on clearance for $3.00. Designed to be worn as a dress (search the tagged photos on Kimberly's Instagram page for inspiration) this hoodie features large gromets and extra long sleeves for a comfy, borrowed from the boys look. I paired the hoodie with a pair of distressed, bleached, boyfriend jeans from Forever 21. They've appeared on the blog multiple times, so I won't go into detail, but these are perhaps the comfiest jeans that I own. To complete the look I added a pair of sock boots from Shop Hope's. If you've been following my blog for the past few months, I posted a DIY on how to create your own sock boots for under $10.00. This pair features a red and white tube sock-like design. A detailed picture of the boots are shown below. Want more Kardashian inspired looks on The Mod Little Melanin? Leave a comment below, and as always submit any questions through the contact page!
- Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋 How I dress daily depends on my mood. Sometimes, I feel sweet and will go for a floral print dress. Sometimes, I feel casual and go for an athleisure look. But for this look, I felt edgy. Continue reading below for outfit details! The focal point of this look were my colorblock boots purchased from Wet Seal as a Christmas gift. The thigh high boots are black, grey and burgundy, and lace up in the back. Lace up boots are perfect because they are adjustable, and can fit just about any leg width. I paired the boots with a pair of burgundy, pleather pants purchased from Forever 21 for $5.99. To counter my colorblock boots, I decided to colorblock my outfit, as well. With burgundy on bottom, adding black on top was one of my best options. I added a black, open-back, bodysuit purchsed for $2.99 from Charlotte Russe, and completed the look with a black suede, fringe jacket purchased from Missguided.com. I was able to purchase this jacket at 90% off for only $8.00. Despite common belief, suede jackets have versatility throughout multiple seasons. In the spring, layer the jacket over a graphic tee, with a pair of jeans and heels for a casual look that is great for a girl's night out! I completed my look by adding a burgundy, bolo choker from Forever 21, and added a pair of mirrored sunglasses from Missguided.com. - Chelsea Nicole, The Mod Little Melanin 💋
Happy Galentine's Day 💕 Going on a friendship date this weekend with your girls and need a look that will slay, snatch edges and turn heads without dropping a ton of money? You know The Mod Little Melanin has got you covered! Continue reading below for outfit details for my Sweetheart Galentine's Day look! Jumpsuits are life! They're super easy to style, and perfect when you need a last minute look that will be sure to make jaws drop. I found this soft pink jumpsuit on CharlotteRusse.com for only $6.99, regularly priced at $34.99. It features a high neckline, and buttons into a halter top at the neck. It also tapers perfectly at the leg, and stops just below the ankle. I'm tall (for a female by today's standards) and have a difficult time finding jumpsuits that work well with my height. If you are below 5'7" I would not recommend this jumpsuit for you, as it would likely bunch at the leg, making your legs look short and stumpy, rather than elongated. For warmth, I added a soft pink, long sleeve, fux fur jacket that I received as a Christmas gift. Similar jackets can be found on sale now at Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. Another place to look is Wet Seal, all of their stores are closing within a few weeks and their prices have been ridiculously slashed. To complete the look, I added minimal accessories and opted to add a pair of gold, pearl earrings to keep the look classy and tasteful. My shoes are a gift from a friend and were purchased from Justfab.com. I wore this outfit to a nightclub and was completely overdressed per usual. I don't mind, people always remember the best dressed in the room. Show me your Galentine's Day Looks using #TMLMGalentinesDay.
