Meet The Mod Little Melanin

Girl Power

Closing out this week on The Mod Little Melanin, but showing you a "girl power" inspired outfit featuring my favorite red velvet boots. Continue reading below for outfit details!

Unlike previous outfits I've styled on The Mod Little Melanin, the focal point of this look was my boots. For this reason, I wanted the remainder of my outfit to complement my boots, not overpower them. I styled this look with a graphic tee I purchased from Rue 21 for $2.99. The gray tee features cuffed sleeves, and a speckled print throughout, with "Girl Gang" written across the front of the tee. I normally am not a graphic tee wearer, however, with graphic t-shirts making a recent comeback in the fashion world, I've decided to incorporate them into my wardrobe.

I paired the boots with black highwaisted jeans from H&M that I purchased for $1.00 (come shop with me, I'll change your life) and layered on a black, suede fringe jacket from Missguided.com. This jacket was originally priced at $80.00, and I purchased it during the summer for only $8.00. The "moto style" of the jacket helps to give the look an edgy vibe, which is exactly what I wanted to portray with this outfit.

Accessories are the most important part of an outfit! For this look, I added a black, faux suede cross choker from Claire's, and a pair of hoop earrings purchased from the hair supply store (because we all knew the best accessories come from there). To further the edgy vibe, I added a pair of mirrored sunnies from Shoppriceless.com for $2.99.

Spring Looks in Late Winter

Looking for a way to include Spring pieces into your Late Winter wardrobe? Continue reading below for outfit details and styling tips!

Layering is an excellent way to wear Spring pieces in the late Winter months! If you live in a mild climate, like I do, where the average temperature is around 50 degrees, layering should be one of your go-to styling gems! For this look I layered a black turtleneck from H&M underneath a abstract printed jumpsuit also from H&M. I purchased the jumpsuit during H&M's recent buy two get one free sale for $7.00. The jumpsuit features deep colors, such as gold, orange, purple and black. The deeper colors make the jumpsuit perfect for the winter months, which are typically reserved for deep, rich colors.

I paired the jumpsuit with a pair of pointed toe boots from Charlotte Russe to give the jumpsuit a boho look. This look didn't have a ton of accessories, mostly because I'm wearing a turtleneck and hats won't fit on my curly hair. However, in the Spring and Summer months I plan to style this jumpsuit as both a boho look, and as an athleisure look. When I do, I promise to show you the versatility of the jumpsuit in a side by side post!

Here are a few styling tips for layering. Choose Spring pieces that have deep, bold colors or patterns. Great layering basics can be found at H&M for less than $10.00.

Flashback with The Mod Little Melanin: Fashionista Advisory

If you haven't figured it out now, I'm a bargain hunter who likes to play around with styles and prints. Good deals make me excited, and a buy one get one free sale could draw tears from my eye. So you can only imagine my excitement when I discovered a full outfit at the Forever 21 buy one get one free sale.

I tend to avoid graphic tees unless they have a musician on them (if I'm being completely honest). The only graphic tees I wear are covered with Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, and Snoop Dogg. When I saw this graphic sweater at Forever 21, I knew I needed to have it. The words on the sweater drew me to it, Fashionista Advisory: Explicit Style. I felt the shirt would be perfect for a blogger like myself, and the $4.99 price (originally $29.90) was perfect. This sweater may still be available at select Forever 21 Stores.

My next find at the Forever 21 sale was a pair of grey boyfriend jeans. At first sight, these jeans looked like they were good quality. They were a higher price ($34.90) which typically equates to better quality in Forever 21. I was wrong. These jeans are cheaply made, poorly stitched and made of the thinnest denim. Shortly, after taking the photo below, this pair of loose fitting jeans ripped leaving an incredibly large hole in the seat area while I was walking. Do not buy these jeans, save your money. I've never purchased a pair of jeans that ripped, and am normally satisfied with a purchase of jeans from Forever 21. If I hadn't gotten this pair of jeans free in the sale (they were also $4.99) I would be completely upset.

To accesorize my outfit, I added my extra large fedora hat from Forever 21 for $11.99 (on sale) and my silver hoop earrings. I choose black heeled boots, which were purchased from Charming Charlie's a few years back and my one of a kind black leather feathered purse. I'm a sunglass fiend, and have over 50 pairs of sunglasses that I've collected over the years, a true waste of money if you ask some. For this outfit, I choose my favorite pair, my silver "Ozzy Osborne" style round frame glasses. I've had this pair for years and don't recall where I purchased them, although similar sunnies can be found on Forever21.com.

Now that I've ruined the jeans in this picture, I'll have to come up with other outfit ideas for this sweater! I'll be sure to show them off in a later post!

Closing out my faux fur series on The Mod Little Melanin with one final look! Continue reading below for outfit details on my black faux fur look!

This look is a super casual look that can easily be styled for any occasion! Because I am wearing an all black outfit, I opted to choose a bold print top to pair with the look. My top is a gold and purple, leopard print turtleneck from Forever 21 that I purchased for $3.99 during an after Christmas sale. The top also features black within the pattern, which is the number one reason I opted to wear an all black look. I paired the look with black denim jeans from Sadie Robertson's Wild Blue Denim × Rue 21 Collection. The jeans are highwaisted, and ripped at the knee, with star beads sewn onto the knee cap, and were on sale for only $5.00.

My faux fur piece is a find from Forever 21's Winter 2016 collection. It features a authentic suede outerlayer and is lined with fur on the inside. If you live in a colder climate, where the weather can fluctuate with the day, this faux fur piece is perfect for your outerwear collection! I completed the look, by adding a pop of color with a pair of denim boots. These boots are dupes of Christian Dior's denim boots, priced at nearly $800. I was able to purchase the dupes from Ego Shoes for only $13.00.

To conclude faux fur week, here are a few styling tips to ensure you are flawless in your faux fur outfit! Don't be afraid to add color to your look. Pop a basic tee shirt, dress or graphic tee with a faux fur vest or jacket. Complete the look with a pair of jeans, and add a pair of heels for the perfect casual daytime look!

Happy Birthday to The Mod Little Melanin!

A year ago, I started The Mod Little Melanin! When I first started this blog, I had no idea if anyone would read it, other than my mom or my best friend. To those who have known me for years, fashion (and medicine) have been my passion for years. In college, I was always dressing out of the ordinary, trying to stay ahead of the fashion trends, and spent much of my time styling my friends for their events and outings. The Mod Little Melanin had been in the works for years in my mind, but being a pre med student, who barely had time to sleep 😅 I had to put off planning my blog until my gap year.

The Mod Little Melanin has grown so much over the past year! I started with an average of 15 views a day, mostly Facebook friends, and somehow skyrocketed to receiving nearly 100 views a day this summer when I posted daily and began to gain features on prominent clothing store's social media accounts and website blogs, including Charlotte Russe and Shop Hope's. I went from showing people my styling services through Styled by Mod, to styling my friends to build my portfolio, to now offering a styling service that can be arranged with a small fee!

Once I started graduate school this past Autumn, I began to post on a schedule, usually every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and gained praise from some of my favorite fashion bloggers, and even was asked to style a few local photo shoots (most of which are still in the works). I attend a small school and hope to be able to reach more readers, both men and women as I continue to expand The Mod Little Melanin, by getting involved with campus organizations.

As I write this, 8556 people have viewed my blog. In the past few months, I have averaged about 1,000 page views a month, and expect that number to grow over the year as I continue to expand my brand to reach a larger audience.

My main point of this post? Don't be afraid to get out there and achieve your goals! When I started this blog, I received a ton of hate from college peers, and I easily could have succumbed to their negative talk and forgot all about The Mod Little Melanin. Many people didn't understand why I would start a blog, or why I thought someone would care to see my fashion posts. I was called self-centered, self-absorbed, amongst other belittling titles. I knew that through The Mod Little Melanin that I could inspire others to chase their dreams. To write that book. To get in the studio and rap. To put pen to paper and reach their goals. Don't let other people tell you what you can and can't do. Don't let them limit you. Don't let them put you in a box and have them show you what you are supposed to do. Show the world what you are destined to do. God has a plan for everyone in their life, and whether we know it or not our purpose is greater than anything we can imagine. I've had readers tell me they love my blog because it shows them ways to style their outfits, or because my style is different than what is considered the norm. And if I can inspire one person to achieve their dream, I've done my job with The Mod Little Melanin.

Stay tuned to The Mod Little Melanin throughout 2017 to see all of the surprises I have in store for readers!
