Styled by Mod: A Coachella Inspired Look

The final weekend of Coachella begins on Friday! Here's a floral, festival inspired style set perfect for Coachella or any music festival you'll be attending this summer!

The focal point of this look are the red, patent leather shorts. While I could have styled these shorts with a graphic tee to make a grunge look, I choose to soften the look by adding a floral printed shirt. By choosing to style these shorts with a flowy, floral shirt that featured hints of red, I was able to better incorporate the shorts into the look. I completed the look by adding floral print "Gucci" inspired shoes, and striped accessories to pop the look. The red sunglasses are the perfect final touch!

Remember, black and white are complementary colors! And adding the color red gives the look just the right amount of pop!

Happy Festival Season!

Styled by Mod: 90's Grunge Revival Week

I'm bringing Styled by Mod back to The Mod Little Melanin! Each week be on the lookout for posts featuring style sets showing additional outfits to rock, or another way to wear a piece I've featured on The Mod Little Melanin! Be sure to follow my Polyvore Style Set Instagram (@StyledbyMod) to see all the style sets before they are posted to the blog!

Here's another grunge revival inspired look that I'll be styling soon on The Mod Little Melanin! Appliqué jeans were a hit in the 90's, and are making a comeback in the fashion world of 2017. I found a pair of appliqué jeans while thrifting. If you aren't one who loves digging through old clothes at the thrift store, check out your local Five Below! Five Below sales their own line of vintage, reconstructed denim for $5.00. I have found several pairs of embroidered jeans from Five Below, and will be distressing them a bit before showing them off on The Mod Little Melanin. If you don't have a Five Below near you, look for an upscale thrift store. Arizona Trading Company is a great option, as they have both a physical store and you can order from them online! Find them on instagram! Style your jeans with an oversized flannel shirt. You can find an affordable flannel shirt in the men's department of Walmart or your local thrift store. Pop your look by adding silver metallic pieces, such as shoes or a purse. Find silver pieces at stores such as Charming Charlie and DSW! The end of season sales should offer you a huge discount. Complete your look with a denim choker and pleather/leather baseball cap, both of which can be found at Charlotte Russe.

Styled by Mod: One Skirt, Two Ways

I haven't done a Styled by Mod in forever and a day! Here's a brand new edition to show you how to style a midi/maxi skirt in two different ways!

Esmeralda Inspired

My influence for the dressier look with this skirt was Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (yes, seriously). Off the shoulder tops are perfect for the summer. They keep you cool, while allowing you to dress up your look with ease. This top is a cropped version, and features a ruffle hem line. Pop your skirt by adding a yellow heel. These heels are by Steve Madden and feature a chunky heel (bye, bye stilletos) for added comfort. I love the red, straw purse with this look to add more color, but a natural color, straw purse could also work. Avoid wearing a necklace with this look, instead, complete your outfit with large earrings (no hoop earrings) and a red lip.

'90s Inspired

'90s grunge is making a comeback this season, if you've been paying attention to the blogs. I adore this patched tank top, which is a super easy DIY with patches you can find at your local craft store. It can't be a '90s inspired look without hightop Converses. These metallic gold hightops deserve to be in your closet. Find them at Journey's. The denim patch backpack goes perfectly with this look! It's also an easy DIY with an old denim, or leather thrifted backpack and patches from the craft store. Complete the look with a choker, I'm loving the thick velvet chokers that are popular now and gold hoop earrings.

Happy Styling!

  • Styled by Mod: You Can't See Me

It's been a minute since I've done a Styled by Mod and there is no better time to do one than during Yeezy Week on The Mod Little Melanin.

Yeezy apperal is known for its earth tones, nudes, khakis, blacks, creams, whites and rusts. The clothing line has also sparked a minimalist trend in both men's and women's fashion. Specifically in women's fashion, casual wear has become increasingly popular over the past year. Basic wear, ie. leggings, crop tops, body suits, bomber jackets and longline sweaters/jackets can be found in just about every trendy women's store. Solid colors have gained appeal in the fashion world over patterns and minimalism is becoming the norm.

I would classify myself as a style chameleon; I don't stick with one style or trend. I rarely conform to what everyone else is wearing. I like to play around with patterns and textures amd stand out from the crowd. However, if you prefer to Keep Up with The Kardashians, here's a look that even I could tolerate wearing.

While I've never seen Kanye include camouflage prints in his Yeezy line other than in outerwear, I felt this jumpsuit incorporated shades that Kanye would typically produce. The jumpsuit is sold on GoJane.com and is rather affordable. It is also available in several other solid colors if camo isn't for you.

To keep with the Yeezy theme, I styled this look with a pair of Yeezy tennis shoes (I don't know the correct name of this style) for a casual look. However, lately Kim Kardashian has been wearing heels and boots with athletic/casual wear and I felt that trend could be included with this look as well. The boots are actually Yeezy boots that will run you about $800. Similar styles of boots are available on publicdesire.com.

Complete the look with a faux leather hat. I thought beige was perfect for this look! My faux leather hat was purchased from Charming Charlie for $4.00 before the accessory became popular. Add a leather shoulder bag, in Chanel if you've got money or Michael Kors if you've got to keep your stunting at a minimum like me. The Kardashians have been including faux fur key chains on their bags lately, so you of course need one. Find them at Walmart for only $3.00.

Styled by Mod: Sunny Days

Back with another edition of Styled by Mod! This look is perfect for the changing seasons, and bright enough for May days!

My base piece for this Styled by Mod set, were these black and white striped shorts. The shorts feature a more elegant look than most traditional summer shorts, and pleats and a high waistline. I am a fan of longer shorts in the summer (mostly because I have long legs) and believe that these shorts will provide a classy look perfect for a night on the town or even work!

Because the shorts are so fancy, I added a blouse to tie together the look. This blouse features a flowly shape, and is a crop top. Crop tops can keep an outfit classy if worn with high waisted shorts. In this look, the crop top allows for the detail of the shorts to be shown off when worn together.

I believe in always wearing a heel or wedge with shorts. For this outfit, I selected an open toe/open heel bootie that was featured in my Spring Shoe Trends post a few months ago. I wanted the outfit to stay sweet and bright, so I choose accessories with flowers and pops of yellow. The hat is from Betsey Johnson's Collection and features daisy appliques on the felt hat. Kate Spade is the designer behind this gorgeous bag that also features a daisy.

The key to accessorizing this look was to find pieces that would not compete with the print on the shorts. My suggestion when adding jewelry and other accessories to this look is to keep accessories simple and in the same color family. Finish off the look with a bright red lip and mascara for long, healthy lashes!

Styled by Mod: Fringe with Benefits

My final polyvore set for my Coachella Vibes series is simply my own outfit planning. It's something you moat certainly could wear to a festival, but it's far to plain for me to wear to a festival. Tomorrow and Friday I'll highlight my own festival-like outfits, that would be perfect to wear if I were to ever go to a festival.

Raw hemline denim is in style this season, so I started with this pair of black denim jeans. I own a similar pair from H&M that I purchased for only $7.00. If you'd rather wear shorts with this look, I suggest a pair of cutoffs in black to create a clean look underneath the white lace vest.

I then added a fringe top, because you can never have too much fringe! A similar top can be found at Forever21.com for only $19.90. Believe it or not this top can be versitile and can be worn with a variety of bottoms. The fringe can also be used to hide any problem areas you may not wish to show.

Overtop of the outfit, I added a white lace vest. The vest in the picture is from NastyGal.com, but I have purchased a similar style of vest from Wet Seal (if you don't have a store near you check online) for only $7.99, at the end of season last year. This vest can be worn with a variety of outfits. To create a sweet look, I have pair this look with matching lace shorts and a nude tank (that actually matched my skin color)! If you're ever looking for nude tops in your skin tone, check Oldnavy! They have tops in just about every shade of tan and brown.

To accesorize, I included the boots that were also highlighted in yesterday's Nasty Gal look. An oversized fedora and a fringe purse.

Styled by Mod: Wild, Wild Fest

It's time to get down and dirty with the Coachella outfits! For this homestretch on Coachella inspired looks, I'll be focusing on including a variety of textures, prints and patterns in the final outfits featured on both Styled by Mod and my blog. All of the pieces featured in this Styled by Mod style set are from Nasty Gal and can be found on nastygal.com.

The first piece I found to begin this style set was this gorgeous skirt. I love the southwestern print featured on the skirt and the embroidery is simply gorgeous. While it's on the pricey side, it's a versitile piece that will work well into any wardrobe that can be dressed up or down, and can even work as a dressy church skirt.

I love this beaded tank from Nasty Gal! Thus far, it is the ultimate festival top that I have come across! It is a bit revealing, and I would definitely not wear the top like the model in the picture! If you're looking for a less revealing look like myself, add a black tank top or cami underneath the top.

Pair the beaded top underneath this leather vest from Nasty Gal. I love the different style of this leather vest, rather than the standard motorcycle leather vest. The brass buckles and crop style of the vest are perfect for a boho festival look! The vest also provides a southwestern look and fits well with the Wild, Wild Fest theme.

Add your usual bohemian accessories to complete the look! A large oversized fedora (a floppy hat won't give the proper look), a black fringe leather purse, and leather boots. Rather than choosing cowboy boots to go with tbe southwestern theme, I found these gourgeous leather boots that feature silver buckles, and a silver steel toe! Remember, it is completely okay to mix silver, gold and bronze accessories together within your outfit!
Picture
If a maxi skirt is your go-to look for a festival, try to find the most creative print or pattern and make that your stand out piece! I suggest checking your local thrift store to find some cool, vintage pieces. I know that Nasty Gal pieces are crazy expensive, so I will try to hunt down affordable maxi skirts and post links throughout the day if you're in need of a festival look asap!

  • Styled by Mod: Girly Grunge

If you adored my Sister, Sister Grunge style set yesterday, you'll love the style set for today! I'm continuing my weekend grunge festival inspiration with a spotlight on rocking a girly grunge look! Today's look even features the Canadian Tuxedo trend!

I started with a pair of mom shorts, a pair of high waisted, rolled denim shorts. This particular pair of shorts was giving me late 1990s Delia's catalog vibes, and I fell in love! The butterfly appliqués also scream, Sister, Sister. While these shorts wouldn't be popular with most, their #1, $2,000 Valentino shorts and #2, perfect for a grunge festival look! They're also an easy DIY with a pair of thrifted denim cutoffs, and iron-on appliques that can be purchased from any craft store!

Remember that crop tops were popular in the '90s, so I added a sweater crop top that can be found at just about any store. I went with a light blue to compliment the denim of the Canadian Tuxedo. To complete the Canadian Tuxedo, I added a vintage, oversized screen printed blazer style denim jacket. While the jacket screams late '80s wear, and is slighty Miami Vice-esque, it blends well with this grunge look.

Complete the look with a pink stocking cap. This cap features a light pink veil, and a few rhinestones which furthers the girly grunge style. Add light pink Doc Martin boots and your girly grunge look is complete.

Styled by Mod: Sister, Sister Grunge

It's a grunge festival weekend on The Mod Little Melanin. I've been so heavily focused on my boho style that I forgot to highlight my other favorite festival style, grunge wear! When I think grunge, think early '90s style cutoffs, flannels, ripped raw hemlines, band tees, crop tops, floral hats, stocking caps, baseball caps and the rise of the Doc Martin Boot. In other words, current fashion influencer, Kylie Jenner's style. Or if you wanna go wayyy back, Sister, Sister grunge style.

Overalls are super versitile, and I believe every person should own a pair! In recent years, overalls have begun to reappear in stores, but you can also come across some great overall finds at your local thrift store. I based this entire look around a pair of light denim short overalls. You can choose any denim wash your heart desires to recreate this look, but keep in mind that light wash denim was popular in the 1990s.

I love the denim on denim look that has been trending this Spring, which is also known as the Canadian Tuxedo. Keeping that trend in mind, I added a denim cropped tank that featured a ripped, raw hemline. I advise you to stick with light denim for the shirt, and if at all possible, try to find a slighty different shade of light denim.

My favorite part of this look are the accessories and shoes! To keep the look as playful as the hats worn by Tia and Tamera Mowry on Sister, Sister, I choose this straw, floral hat. A super easy DIY that I will show on The Mod Little Melanin within the next week! I also added this super cute Kate Spade donut purse. I realize some of my Mod Little Melanin readers would avoid both accessories in real-life (I wouldn't) but remember that attending any music festival is about being free spirited, and breaking out of your shell. To complete the look, I added a pair of white Doc Martin boots. If you want a similar style of boot without the price, check your local Wet Seal!

Styled by Mod; It's a Mod, Mod World

Back with another '70s inspired edition of Styled by Mod! This Styled by Mod style board is in collaboration with Chelsea Payne-Sarhan, a KEEP Collective designer who creates gorgeous bracelets and necklaces using keepers and keepsake charms. I am loving the new denim trends which I highlighted in an earlier blog post, titled Spring Denim Trends. Flared and bell bottom jeans are popular pant styles this season. Add a twist to this born-again denim trend by opting for a frayed hem line, as shown in the flared ankle jeans below. Keep the '70s vibes flowing by adding a light pink tank with a matching feather hem top, which creates the illusion of a frayed hem. Complete the look with '70s-esque platform floral heels and a baby blue structured tote bag.
Picture
Accessorize your look with some of the keepers below! In order to embrace the simplicity of the outfit, opt for this simple keeper with a single stone. This gorgeous blush and rose gold leather keeper is reversible, giving you so much versatility for your buck! Add a circle or square stone in blue or blush to your blush and rose gold leather keeper, and you have a full bracelet for only $48! Or, add the mini geo stone or the larger, pointed geo stone to your blush and rose gold keeper for only $44! KEEP Collective also offers necklaces for your keepsake charms, as shown below.

Styled by Mod: Festival Daze

It's Festival Season!

Here is the first of many festival looks inspired by Zoë Kravitz, a grunge fashion goddess if you ask me.

Festival Wear is all about creativity! Take the time to play with textures when planning your outfit for a music festival. Mix faux (or real) fur with lace and suede or opt for a similar prints that can provide outfit contrast when combined like in the look below!

Floral print is always popular for festival wear, so I combined two very different floral prints that ultimately provide the outfit a cohesive flow. Pattern/texture mixing is a must when attending a festival; avoid simplicity and solids at all cost.

The shorts are loose and flowy, allowing you to stay cool at a festival. While the vest can be worn open if you would rather show off the crop top underneath or closed for a sophisticated look (if you wanted that at a festival). The embroidery on both the shorts and the jacket give a 90s grunge vibe.

Comfy shoes are a must to complete the look, so I chose gladiator sandals that will pair perfectly with the loose bermuda-style shorts. Keep the sun off of your head with a large wool fedora hat, avoid a straw hat as it won't work well with this outfit.

When walking through a crowd at a festival, a large purse is not ideal. Instead, opt for an updated version of a fanny pack. This fanny pack is from Chloe and runs for about $900. If you're not ready to spend a few months savings on that like me, similar versions are available on Forever21.com. Stay sheek in these round eye sunnies that feature a metal floral design around the rim.

SXSW begins this weekend and is the perfect festival for this look to all my Texas Trill blog readers.

Happy Festival Daze!

Styled by Mod: Airport Style

If you're like me and plan out your outfits for an entire week ahead, then you'll understand why what you wear to the airport is so important. My motto has always been to look presentable at all times, no matter how you feel or where you may be going. Traveling via an airplane is no different! The number one goal when flying is to select comfortable clothing to wear, I hate sweatpants and yoga pants outside of the gym, so here are my top three airport looks if you'll be traveling soon. I'll be traveling to Hampton, VA tomorrow, so be on the lookout to see which of the three ideas I selected for my airplane wear!

My first look, is centered around a pair of harem pants that are army green, a popular color for Autumn 15/Winter 16. These pants are super comfy, and feature a drawstring waistband. I purchased my pair of harem pants from Oldnavy for $2.00 on clearance. If I select this look for the plane, I'll be adding a tan and white striped turtleneck purchased from Rue21 from $3.00, but any tan, beige, cream or white shirt can work with this outfit. For warmth, I'll be adding my tan faux fur jacket. I like to wear heeled boots, but there is always a possibility that you will have to run through the airport, so I selected a pair of Adidas Superstar Tennis Shoes. If you own Yeezys in beige (which I want so badly) they would go perfect with this look.
Picture
My next look features stretch suede bell bottom pants, that I purchased from Target for $6.99. If I wear this look on the airplane, I plan to add a black and white striped turtleneck to break up the solid black, I purchased mine from Rue21 for $3.00. If you feel comfortable with experimenting with different textures, add a black faux fur vest and black suede or black leather Doc Martin style boots.
Picture
This final look is super basic, and super easy to put together, and should be anyone's go to outfit when flying. Simply add a pair of black leggings, and a solid black t-shirt as your base. Layer over it a poncho or wrap that has the base color (black) in it, and you have the perfect airplane outfit! Add black riding boots to complete the look.
Picture
Don't limit these outfits simply to the airport, these outfits are perfect for all forms of traveling! If you'll be traveling soon add the hashtag #themodlittlemelanin so that I can see your airport style! Happy flying!

Styled by Mod: Denim, Denim, Denim

I added a blue faux fur coat to play on the denim theme, and a pair of patchwork denim boots. This look is similar to my "Fifty Shades of Blue Faux Fur" post that was posted on The Mod Little Melanin in January.
