Welcome Back to The "All New" Mod Little Melanin

Welcome back to The "All New" Mod Little Melanin! Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be rolling out the new features of my updated website, including new formats to present blog posts to readers. In my mini hiatus from The Mod Little Melanin, my goal was to redesign the website to gain more readers. My blog has quickly grown over the summer, with the number of page views I recieve per day sky rocketing. Last month I had 5,000 page views, a number I never imagined I would recieve as a blogger. As my blog continues to grow, I will continue to bring more professional content to the blog in order to gain attention from larger clothing stores. I have already been featured on Shop Hope's twitter page, recieved praise from OOTD Channel (a huge IG account for OOTD posts), and have been featured in a few online fashion magazines. I look forward to having all of my readers continue with me on this journey as a fashion blogger!

If you've noticed the style of Kim Kardashian-West or Rihanna lately, you would have noticed that oversized fashion is back. No longer are your favorite celebrities selecting fitted clothing, but are instead opting to wear baggy jeans, oversized tops and a pair of heels. Thanks to the style trends of Kanye's Yeezy clothing, more women are now choosing to wear oversized tops as dresses, etc.

In this look, I am wearing an oversized dress, to create the baggy look. I purchased this dress from Oldnavy in a Size 2X with the plan to style the dress in multiple ways. For this style, I choose to completely button up the dress and add a fringe belt to cinch it in at the waist. Another way to style this dress would be to wear it as outerwear, either over another dress, such as a cream, lace dress or a royal/navy blue dress or over jeans and a tank top.

To accessorize, I added a pair of gold button earrings, as to not over power the dress and a pair of gold, cat eye sunglasses from Forever 21. My shoes are a pair of platform, gold sandals from Target that I have lived in all summer, and probably will continue to rock through Autumn, as I live in a part of the country where the seasons don't always reflect the "typical" seasonal temperature. A red lip was the key to completing this look, but lipstick is always the key to completing the look 😉

Happy Autumn!

Autumn Trends: Jersey Dresses

9/12/2016

Jersey dresses are back this season, but not in the fashion of the early 2000s, thank goodness! This season's jersey is a take on the popular athleisure trend, in which your favorite fashion icons are turning athletic wear into street style couture. Today's jersey dress is typically in the form of a bodycon dress, and sports jersey-style number on the front and occasionally the back. Rather than sporting a team name, the jersey dress will have a witty slogan or popular word on the front, (i.e. Slay).

My jersey dress is about as girly as it gets. It features "Chic" across the front above leopard print numbers "08." I was lucky enough to purchase this dress from JcPenny for around $5.00 long before athleisure even became popular. This racerback, midi dress can be dressed up or down but looks best when paired with a pair of tennis shoes.

I paired my dress with my Nike Juvenate Dupes from Ego.co.uk. While I realize the Nike version of the shoe isn't that expensive, I rarely wear tennis shoes, unless it's to keep up with the Kardashians on their athleisure trends, and refuse to pay $80 for a shoe that will sit in my closet most of the time.

To take the look a step further, I paired it with a gold iridescent, textured bomber from Forever 21, that I got for $10.00 last winter. As the temperature begins to change this Autumn, a bomber is the perfect way to keep warm while showing off your athleisure vibes. On Friday, I posted a Yeezy Bomber dupe similar to a jacket Kim Kardashian was seen wearing a few weeks ago. Visit the "Fake It Till Ya Make It" tab for more details.

Autumn Transition Looks: Sweatshirts

9/7/2016

If you've seen the memes floating around on Facebook discussing people's favorite things about Autumn, sweatshirts are absolutely included on that list! Today's look features a unique take on the popular Autumn piece, the sweatshirt, but is perfect to transition from the warmer to colder months of Autumn with a few simple transitions.

My sweatshirt is a longline, flowly tank that I found at Marshalls a few years ago. While it is a tank top, it is not your ideal piece when the temperature is in the 90s. I have always worn this look in the earlier Autumn months, but plan to take the look into the latter Autumn months this year as well. There are several ways to make the transition successfully.

The first is by mixing different textures. Layer a long sleeve black, lace top underneath the tank for an instant sweet, yet edgy look. Add a thick velvet or lace choker, put your hair up into a ballerina bun with pearl or crystal studs to complete the look. Pair your top with a black bottom, so that the focal point od the look becomes the sweatshirt tank. Don't forget to add your bold lip; I prefer Rimmel London's Boudreaux, which is a deep burgendy lipstick, available at Target for only $4.99.

Another way to transition this look into the colder months of Autumn is by layering a faux fur jacket overtop of this tank. I own a black, grey and white faux fur coat that would look perfect paired with this tank. The key to pulling off this look is by making it appear effortless. To accomplish this, pair the look with a high waisted black pant, or a legging if your wardrobe is lacking a black pant. Pair with a pair of thigh high black heeled boots. I suggest hitting up Ego.co.uk if you are in need of a new pair this fall. Style your hair in two long plaits (boxer braids if you don't know what a plait is) and keep your lip neutral, I always choose a peach color when I'm in need of a neutral look. Add a thin choker and large hoop earrings to finish off the earrings. If you're not feeling the plaits, wear your hair half up, half down for this look.

Since it's early September, I styled this look with grey, distressed jeans that I found on clearance at Oldnavy for $2.00. I paired the look with a pair of lace up flats from Ego.co.uk, a thick velvet choker from Forever21.com and a velvet hat from Forever 21.
