Bey Day

Bey Day. May 28th. Quite possibly one of the greatest days I've experienced in my young 22 years of life. Beyoncé rocked Soldier Field in Chicago, IL, on night one in the pouring rain (when has your fave ever) and on night two in gorgeous weather. To be in her presence for noght two of her Chicago show was absolutely everything and she did not disappoint in her performance. I've uploaded a few videos to my social media pages if you'd like to see short clips of her performance.

For The Formation Tour, I wanted an outfit that would stand out from the rest, which certainly wasn't hard. Missguided.com was my go-to website to search for cute, affordable, fashionable clothing for the concert. Essentially, Missguided.com is the "poor man's" version of NastyGal.com.

When I was searching through the website, I came across velvet two piece sets that I instantly fell in love. My velvet set is available in Mocha and several other colors on the website (if they are still available). I choose the Mocha, along with another color you will see very soon because I felt the Mocha would look best with my skin tone. The top and bottom were available for $8.99 each.

My shoes are also from Missguided.com. The Laser Cut Knee High Gladiator Sandals were super comfortable to wear for the entire duration of the concert, thanks to the platform base of the shoe. For stilletos, I managed to walk a mile in these shoes from Soldier Field to my car pretty easily. These shoes weren't made for walking as I managed to break both stilleto heel tips off the shoe. Thankfully the shoes came with extra heel tips. These shoes are still available on the website for $27.20.

I didn't put a lot of effort into accessorizing this outfit because it was an outdoor concert and I wanted to be comfortable outdoors. I choose to stack rings and added large hoop earrings.

I'm completely in formation after attending The Formation Tour. If you didn't get a chance to go and experience the tour and live in MO/KS/IL, she'll be having a concert in St. Louis in September. Tickets are currently on sale.

Don't Hurt Yourself

Don't Hurt Yourself by Beyoncé could be considered the unofficial black woman's anthem for strength and empowerment. It continues with the cheating motif from the previous song on the album, "Hold Up," and expresses a range of emotions beginning with the opening line "Who the **** do you think I is" and the ominous outro lyrics "Uh, this is your final warning. You know I give you life. If you try this **** again, you gone lose your wife."

To get Beyoncé's look for less from the music video, I searched the website of the popular Instagram boutique, Fashion Nova. In the video, Beyoncé is seen wearing a grey two-piece crop tank with a matching capri bottom. Overtop of the two piece set, Beyoncé is wearing a floor length fur coat. The two piece, along with her boots are pieces from Yeezy, and the outfit is quite Kim Kardashian-West-esque.
Picture
Several options for a grey two piece are available at FashionNova.com. The Runaway With Me Crop Top and Crop Legging is a fancier upgrade from Beyoncé's outfit. The top features a cut out, criss cross bodice and is perfect to wear for a night out.

If you're looking for a look closer to Beyoncé's, I suggest the Hot Sauce in My Bag Set (cue Formation). The set is nearly identical to Beyoncé's outfit, with the only differing characteristic being the black and red "Gucci-like" stripe down the front of the top. The leggings are also in a cropped cut. If you're not comfortable with a two piece set, I recommend one of the one piece jumpsuits on the website.

Because it's summer and a fur coat wouldn't be ideal, unless you live in Alaska, I recommend choosing the Buisness Casual Coat in Black for the same effect.

If you're looking for affordable "Yeezy" boot lookalikes, look no further than PublicDesire.com. The Briella Perspex Heel Boots in Grey are most similar to the pair Beyoncé wears in "Don't Hurt Yourself."

Tomorrow I'll be closing Beyoncé Week on The Mod Little Melanin with a few different looks that will be posted throughout the day on Thursday and Friday.

They Don't Love You Like I Love You

Hold Up by Beyoncé is an ode to possibly her partner, rapper Sean "Jay-Z" Carter or references the infidelity she witnessed first hand from her mother and father's relationship. The song reveals a variety of emotions ranging from rage to resentment in which she reflects on the behavior of her mystery significant other. In fact, the opening stanza of the song states how crazy her spouse would be to cheat on her because they'll never love him like she loves him. Based on a majority of the lyrics of the song, it can be interpreted that Beyoncé is the cheated on lover and Jay-Z is the cheater. There is even a borrowed lyric from Soulja Boy's "Turn My Swag On" at the end of "Hold Up."

I had a difficult time finding a look similar to Beyoncé's in the "Hold Up" video and ended up having to take the look in a completely different direction. The most important element I wanted to keep from the original look was the illusion of ruffles/pleats throughout the dress. I was able to find a lavender dress from NastyGal.com that did just that.
Picture
The Nasty Gal I'll Take That Net Ruffle Dress is a bit more expensive for an item I would feature on The Mod Little Melanin, but when dressing for The Formation Tour spending should be limitless, right? For $98.00, you can be the owner of this gorgeous lavender dress that features a sheer bodice and ruffles at the bust and bottom of the dress. Because the dress is sheer, I recommend adding either nude (flesh) colored pieces underneath or incorporating color into your outfit by adding a deep purple or pink pieces underneath.
While Beyoncé is wearing chunky platform heels in the music video, I choose to add a nude lace-up knee high heel in nude. By adding a nude shoe, the focus can remain on the dress more than the shoe. The nude lace up heels are from Urbanog.com, my favorite site to find affordable, stylish shoes, and are available on the site as the Perforated Scalloped Suede Lace Up Boots.
Picture
To accessorize, I would add simple stud earrings as your only accessory in order to keep the focus on your dress. I suggest less tamed hair to complete the look. I'd wear my natural, but other options include loose curls or waves to finish off the look. The bigger the hair, the better!
