This weekend I highlighted Sister, Sister style "girly" grunge on Styled by Mod! Here's my take on girly grunge!
I started with a black and white striped, long sleeve bodycon dress. I purchased this dress from Forever 21, on clearance, for $6.99. I bought the dress because of the price, originally, but was completely unsure of how to style it. The dress alone seemed quite drab and boring and need something to make it stand out. I felt a grunge look was the perfect way to give the dress a pop of Mod Little Melanin style. If you plan on purchasing this dress, or any bodycon dress, I recommend going a size down for a more fitted dress, as most bodycon dresses are looser at the bottom and more fitted at the top.
I added a vintage jean jacket from Oldnavy to further the grunge look. This jean jacket is a find in my father's closet and was purchased in 2004, according to the date on the tag. It has a distressed look, a slightly ripped hemline and a brownish tint to the denim. If you plan on thrifting a jean jacket, I suggesting looking in the men's section and buying a size XL or larger. While the sleeves will be long on the jacket, an oversized denim jacket will be best to easily create a 1990s grunge look. In fact, an oversized jean jacket is very versitile and can be used to create a Canadian Tuxedo (as seen in yesterday's Styled by Mod) and can be worn with a variety of tops and bottoms.
To accesorize my grunge look, I added a black faux suede oversized fedora hat with faux feather accents around the brim. I also stacked several necklaces to provide a "girly" look. Looking back on this outfit, I wish I would have choosen to stack chokers rather than necklaces as it would have better reflected a grunge look. To complete the look, I decided to wear the perfect boots for Spring! These Celebrity boots from Wet Seal are open on the side and feature straps and buckles on the side of the boot. They are very open and allow your foot to breathe. If you wear boots like this I suggest wearing a thin footie sock. I purchased black footie socks from the Dollar Tree for 3 pairs for $1.00 to wear with shoes like this.
I hope my grunge look has inspired all the fashionistas out there!
